Aesthetic Priorities

Outside The Box, oil painting by Melody Phaneuf

“When I move, all I’m taking is my painting.”
Sophie is five years old and has outgrown her bedroom. I was happy to hear through her family grapevine, that she has her aesthetic priorities in order. I must also admit that I’m a bit relieved that Outside The Box made Sophie’s discriminating cut for her new bedroom.
I purchased the whimsical Jack in the box to paint because I have a fondness for both Jesters and polka dots. The toy seemed to be the archetype of early childhood. I painted it against a yellow ground because it completed a primary triad, a color scheme that exudes happiness.
This joyful little painting had big ambitions. It was during open studios one year that a visitor who purchased a print of Outside The Box shared her reason with me. She had been reading about certain toys that develop fine motor skills and a Jack in the box topped the list. Her child was still an infant but she thought the image of the toy would capture his curiosity enough to reach for playthings sooner and why not attract him toward those toys that develop precision?
I love to know when a painting speaks to many people on a variety of levels. I’m hoping to speak with Sophie soon, for more elaboration on her views. But she is very busy at the moment, what with the move and all.
