The Joy of Yellow

Oil painting of sunflowers by Melody Phaneuf

The vibrant spirit of yellow lures me with thoughts of warmth and sunshine. Yellow has a stimulating, lightening and gladdening effect on the soul. In Greek mythology, the Sun God Helios wore a flowing, yellow robe as fiery horses hastened his chariot across the sky. The Sun’s radiant yellow light became a symbol for wisdom and power.

Yellow was Van Gogh’s favorite color. His landscapes are drenched with the scintillating golden light of southern France. Yellow expressed his passion. Van Gogh’s paintings from the Yellow House in Arles expressed his affection for his painting companion, Paul Gauguin.

In the featured painting Yellow, sunflowers echo a radiant compositional theme. The flowers act as the hub of a wheel on which pears, book, and sweet treats mark the spokes. The sunny arrangement expresses joy and I hope, will encourage summer.
