Wintery Visions of Suzor-Coté

Corner of My Village, by Suzor Cote
~
After what seemed to be endless shoveling, I am happy to be painting again. Finding myself to be less enthusiastic than I was earlier about snow paintings, I resolved to restore my winter spirit with the vision of Suzor-Coté.
I recall stumbling upon this artist’s work in Québec and wondered why I had never heard of him, particularly since he had studied in Paris. His canvases were fairly large and the scumbled paint possessed the texture of crusty French bread. His riveting abstract shapes, so musical in distribution, along with his sensitive observation and weaving of color were magical, yet familiar. It was as if Suzor-Coté could hear what he saw. He perceived the soul of substances and described it in paint the way Rumi extolled it in poetry.
Suzor-Coté expressed beauty in the humblest subjects and found gentleness in the harshest of seasons. His winter paintings never fail to inspire me.
