A Vision of Order

Winter's Passage II by Melody Phaneuf, 30 x 25 oil painting

There is a kind of order that comes from seeking wholeness. Vision of the whole dominates perfection of any of the smaller parts, they are only important in as much as they support the structure of the entire design.
How does one capture this wholeness in a painting? At the outset all small detail is suppressed. The painting begins as a blur and slowly emerges based on the large relationships of light and dark shapes and their correct orientation to one another. These essential relationships are adjusted before smaller ones are added, edges gradually become firmer and all is brought together in unison. What is inessential to the sense of wholeness is excluded from the picture.
This method is to me, the essence of breathing life into a painting. A picture created this way can be stopped at any point and maintain a certain unity and completeness. Continuing to the limit can result in an animated presence.
