Rhythms And Radiance

Still Life painting by Melody Phaneuf, Boston Artist

Rhythms and Radiance, 24 x 17 oil painting by Melody Phaneuf

Light and Glass are exquisite playmates. Sometimes bending, sometimes bouncing, light penetrates glass and splashes color like liquid. I recall the exhilarating experience of standing in a ray of blue light from a towering rose window the first time I visited Chartres Cathedral in France. It is easy to understand how souls are transported in such magnificent structures, bathed in colored light.

It is exhilarating to paint the effects of tinged illumination. The blown-glass bottle in Rhythms And Radiance intrigues me. The hand finish is irregular and highlights suggested a flame pattern, like a bonfire or a phoenix rising. It called out for feathers, which established the rest of the color scheme. Amber reflections vibrate in cast shadows. The lyrical pattern in the shelf supports the pulsating movement of the composition.
